What to Expect During Your Roof Replacement
If you’ve never gone through a roof replacement before, it can feel like a big mystery. Here’s a simple breakdown of what actually happens so you know exactly what to expect.
1. Pre-job walk-through
We show up, look over access points, protect landscaping where needed, and review the plan with you. You’ll know where we’ll park, where materials go, and roughly how long the job should take.
2. Tear-off
The old shingles, underlayment, and damaged wood (if any) are removed. This part is noisy, but it goes quickly with a good crew.
3. Deck inspection
Once the old roof is off, we check the wood sheathing underneath. If anything is rotted or soft, we replace it so the new roof has a solid base.
4. Installation of underlayment and ice & water shield
Michigan code requires ice and water protection because of our winters. This layer helps prevent leaks from ice dams and wind-driven rain.
5. Shingles or metal installation
This is the part most homeowners love to watch. It’s fast, clean, and transforms your home almost instantly.
6. Ventilation upgrades
If your attic needs better airflow, this is when ridge vents, baffles, or additional vents are installed. Good ventilation is key to a long-lasting roof.
7. Cleanup
A good company will clean up thoroughly. We run magnets to pick up nails, haul away all debris, and leave your yard tidy.
8. Final inspection and walkthrough
We check the entire installation, confirm everything meets code and manufacturer guidelines, and make sure you’re happy. You’ll get warranty information and know exactly who to call if you ever need anything.
How long does it take?
Most homes take one day. Bigger or more complex roofs may take two to three.
Replacing a roof is a big project, but it shouldn’t feel stressful. When you know what’s coming, the process is straightforward and surprisingly quick.
